As pediatric dentists, one of the most common questions we hear from parents is, “How early can children get braces?”
The answer to this question is not always straightforward, as every child’s dental development is unique.
In this post, we’ll discuss the factors that determine when a child may be ready for orthodontic treatment and what signs to look for that may indicate the need for braces.
What Age Can You Get Braces?
The American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) recommends that children have their first orthodontic evaluation by the age of 7. This early assessment allows your pediatric dentist or orthodontist to identify potential issues with tooth alignment, jaw growth, and bite development.
Early detection of orthodontic problems can help:
- Guide proper jaw growth
- Correct harmful oral habits, such as thumb-sucking or tongue-thrusting
- Improve the appearance and function of the smile
- Reduce the risk of trauma to protruding front teeth
- Minimize the need for more complex orthodontic treatment later in life
Signs Your Child May Need Braces
While every child develops differently, there are some common signs that may indicate the need for orthodontic treatment:
- Early or late loss of baby teeth
- Difficulty chewing or biting
- Mouth breathing
- Thumb-sucking or pacifier use beyond age 4
- Crowded, misplaced, or blocked-out teeth
- Jaws that shift or make sounds
- Biting the cheek or roof of the mouth
- Teeth that meet abnormally or not at all
- Jaws and teeth that are out of proportion to the rest of the face
If you notice any of these signs in your child, it’s essential to schedule an orthodontic evaluation with your pediatric dentist or orthodontist.
Types of Orthodontic Treatment for Children
Orthodontic treatment for children can take various forms, depending on the specific issues being addressed and the child’s stage of dental development.
Some common types of orthodontic treatment for children include:
- Early Interceptive Treatment: This phase of treatment, also known as Phase I treatment, typically occurs between the ages of 6 and 10. It involves the use of appliances, such as palatal expanders or partial braces, to guide jaw growth and create space for permanent teeth.
- Traditional Braces: Once most of the permanent teeth have erupted, usually around age 11-13, your child may be ready for traditional braces. These consist of metal or ceramic brackets bonded to the teeth and connected by wires, which are periodically adjusted to gradually straighten the teeth and correct the bite.
- Clear Aligners: For mild to moderate orthodontic issues, clear aligners like Invisalign® may be an option for older children and teens. These removable, custom-fitted trays are worn over the teeth to gently shift them into proper alignment.
Your pediatric dentist will recommend a consultation with an orthodontist so that they can recommend the most appropriate treatment plan based on your child’s individual needs and stage of dental development.
