What is Fluoride?
Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral found in water that helps combat tooth decay. It can also strengthen tooth enamel, prevent cavities, and lessen the damage of plaque on teeth. Fluoride is added to water sources and toothpaste due to these perks.
Is Fluoride Safe?
Fluoride is safe for use in children as long as you don’t go too far over the recommended amounts of fluoride depending on your child’s age. You should start using fluoride toothpaste for tooth brushing as soon as a child’s teeth start erupting.
- If your child is under the age of 3, it is recommended to use about a grain of rice-sized amount (“smear”) of toothpaste to brush.
- For children ages 3 and up, using a pea-sized amount of toothpaste is recommended.
Regular checkups for your child at the pediatric dentist’s office will help cement your child’s oral health habits and development. The dentist will check all areas of their oral health including their gums, teeth, and jaw. Talk to your pediatric dentist about the best fluoride options for your child. Contact our office if you have any questions or concerns!
