Repairing Small Breaks or Chips

With children, there’s always a risk of a tooth getting chipped or broken.

In cases of emergency, dial 911. In cases that involve an injury other than the mouth, visit an emergency room or an urgent care center. If your child just has a chipped or broken tooth and no other underlying medical emergency, please contact your dentist right away.

At Cumberland Valley Pediatric Dentistry Dr. Jacqueline Caster will first examine the child’s mouth and determine the extent of damage to the tooth and what can be done to repair the tooth. If you can locate the tooth fragment, bring it with you to in a bag with a few drops of saline or water so Dr. Kolts can evaluate the fracture.

How Dr. Kolts repairs a broken tooth depending on the size of the chip or break and where it’s located. In some cases, it can be repaired with a simple filling just like a cavity. Dr. Kolts may also be able to bond the broken tooth fragment, especially if the chip is from one of the front teeth.

Dr. Kolts may repair larger dental fractures or fractures that affect the nerve and blood vessels with dental crowns or veneers.

Repairing Larger Breaks

A veneer is a covering for a tooth that restores form, function and aesthetics. A Veneer is often a good option for fractured/chipped tooth repair of the front teeth. If the broken tooth exposed the living tissue inside of a tooth, a root canal may be necessary to prevent infection and to prepare the tooth for final restoration to its intended appearance.
