As a parent, you want the best for your child’s health, and that includes their oral health.
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) recommends that children have their first dental visit by their first birthday or within six months of their first tooth appearing.
As pediatric dentists, we understand that the thought of your child’s first dental visit may be accompanied by some uncertainty or anxiety.
In this post, we’ll walk you through what to expect during this important milestone, helping you and your child feel more prepared and at ease.
Before Your Child’s First Dentist Appointment
To help your child have a positive first dental experience, there are a few things you can do to prepare:
- Schedule the appointment at a time when your child is typically well-rested and not hungry.
- Use positive language when talking about the dentist, avoiding words like “pain,” “shot,” or “drill.”
- Read books or watch videos about first dental visits to help your child know what to expect.
- Fill out any necessary paperwork beforehand to minimize waiting room time.
During the Visit Your child’s first dental visit will typically include the following steps:
- Introduction and Familiarization
- Your pediatric dentist will greet you and your child, creating a friendly and welcoming atmosphere.
- They will show your child the dental chair, explaining the various tools and equipment in an age-appropriate manner.
- Oral Examination
- Your child will be asked to sit in the dental chair or on your lap, depending on their age and comfort level.
- The dentist will gently examine your child’s teeth, gums, jaw, and bite, looking for any signs of decay, inflammation, or developmental issues.
- They may use a small mirror and light to get a better view of your child’s mouth.
- Cleaning and Fluoride Treatment (if needed)
- If your child is comfortable and cooperative, the dentist or hygienist may clean their teeth with a soft toothbrush or polisher.
- They may apply a fluoride varnish to help strengthen the enamel and prevent cavities.
- Education and Guidance
- Your pediatric dentist will discuss their findings with you and provide guidance on proper oral hygiene practices, diet, and nutrition.
- They will answer any questions you may have about your child’s oral health and development.
- You’ll schedule your child’s next regular check-up, typically within six months.
- Positive Reinforcement
- Throughout the visit, your pediatric dentist will use positive reinforcement to help your child feel comfortable and encouraged.
- They may offer praise, stickers, or small prizes to celebrate your child’s cooperation and bravery.
After The First Dentist Appointment
Following your child’s first dental visit, continue to reinforce good oral hygiene habits at home:
- Brush your child’s teeth twice a day with a soft-bristled, age-appropriate toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste.
- Floss daily once your child has two teeth that touch.
- Provide a healthy, balanced diet, limiting sugary and acidic foods and drinks.
- Schedule regular dental check-ups every six months.
