We know that for adults mouthwash can be an extremely beneficial asset to helping us keep up healthy oral health. What can be a bit more questionable is a kid’s use of mouthwash. Mouthwash is certainly marketed as being an appealing aid in a healthy mouth to go alongside brushing teeth because of its simplicity. But how worthwhile is including mouthwash in your children’s dental hygiene routine actually?
What Benefits Does Mouthwash Have For Your Kid?
- Mouthwash’s main objective is protection against cavities, powered by fluoride
- Mouthwash helps deter bad breath
- Mouthwash is particularly helpful for your kid/children to use if they struggle with consistently brushing twice a day and flossing daily like most dentists recommend.
- Mouthwash used by older kids can be a benefit especially if they have braces, as frequent rinsing can help release the built-up bacteria which can hide underneath.
- For users of all ages, mouthwash should be seen as a compliment to brushing and flossing rather than as an alternative.
When Can My Child Begin Using Mouthwash?
We do not recommend the use of mouthwash in your child’s dental care routine while they are under the age of 6.
This is because their ability and understanding to not swallow the mouthwash are not usually developed well until around or after this point. Though there’s no alcohol like in some adult branded mouthwashes, fluoride and the other substances in kids’ mouthwash are unsafe to swallow in large quantities. Look for ADA-approved brands at the store. Those with the seal of acceptance have been tested by independent experts for safety and efficacy.
Mouthwash Safety – Testing It Out
The best way to see if your kid is ready is to supervise them and have them try it in front of you. If they pass the test, they’re good to go! If not, try again another time. The main point you want to get across to your child is that mouthwash is not a beverage they can drink. Be sure to always supervise until they get to a point where they can do it on their own. As mentioned earlier, large quantities of mouthwash are unsafe for consumption. Try making swishing fun for them, make it a game.
